Emocionada

I am very excited. In about two weeks time I will be traveling right into the old (and maybe still current) captial of tango - to Buenos Aires! One of my teachers will be there, teaching and dancing, and the opportunity to see and feel this metropolis was simply too tempting. So here we go! A friend is coming along, also dancing, holding my hand and hopefully watching out for me a bit. I will breathe the same air that gave birth to this dance, I will tread the same ground so many unspeakably good musicians and dancers tread before, I will sweat in the unbearably heavy "good" air and I most certainly will be flabbergasted because there is no way I am able to anticipate what will happen to me. But I am ready to sniff that air and digest as best I can all impressions that will fill me within 2 weeks. Argentina - I am coming!

Last weekend I once again visited Berlin in family matters. But this time I brought along my dance shoes just in case a bad tango yearing should overcome me. And it did - I longed for tango music and the warm atmosphere of a lively milonga and followed the recommendation of a friend to a small milonga in a sports studio which was said to be hosted by real Argentines.

When I arrived at 11 pm there surprisingly was no problem finding a place to sit. I settled down and watched the scene a little. 8-10 couples were dancing, a few more were sitting at tables, chatting away. The atmosphere was improvised and refreshingly shirtsleeved. Unfortunately the sound too was a little shirtsleeved and was not loud enough for the room so that it was difficult to discern the orchestra playing and impossible to hear a clear beat. You could not let yourself be carried away by the music and I wondered if the dancers were able to hear the beat when dancing. I watched them and leaned back. I was not really tempted to dance with any one of the leads I had seen up to now, there was a lot of pushing, pressuring, hopping, unsteadiness and showing off of figures. Above all there was a flurry, unsteady feeling. Still I tried to attract a few cabeceos at the beginning of a tanda. With little success since most dancers stayed on the dance floor during the cortina and the others avoided my eye contact. That did not surprise me, I know this North-German shyness to contact the unfamiliar and the preference to stay in ones familiar groups, not daring to dance with an unknown dancer. And I myself was not in a mood to get up and conquer a dance partner myself this evening.

But I had a charming couple from Israel sitting at my table and enjoyed a few words here and there. They were visiting for a few days and this was the second evening out dancing. Very nice and charming individuals they were, friendly and polite but not too talkative, still open and communicative. As a vals-tanda began to play, they got up to dance and I watched with growing pleasure. The danced very finely, reduced without unnecessary movements and very musically. They moved so harmoniously together, they radiated a wonderful calmness when dancing. And certainly they were a unique appearance this evening. I watched and tried to discern what made them so different. There was a sincere modesty even if they were very good dancers. There was a profound joy for the music and clarity in every movement. They returned to the table and the man immediately invited me to dance with a smiling cabeceo. I was a little concerned, having realized that he was dancing way above my level and also him being smaller than I am. He only smiled and said that all German women were larger than he and if he wanted to dance, he would have to cope. My concern dissolved within seconds. He offered me a calm, clear embrace without any pressure and made me feel very comfortable. He waited until I was settled and off we went. And I can't but rave a little here... The first tango he led simple steps, calming me. Whenever I struggled a little to stay balanced (this was my first tanda of the evening), he gave me space and time to do so and to readjust the embrace. With every tango, his dancing became more complex, still never pressuring me. I felt at ease and had enough free mind to realize how he structured his dance, how he danced the music, even if indeed the beat was difficult to hear. He danced phrases and pauses, left room for the singer once he began to sing without drowning him in figures and created a wonderful crescendo towards the end to underline the bandoneon end-turbo, coming to a clear and simple halt at the ending beats. This was pure heaven! He brought me back to our table, I sat down and was knocked over. Soon afterwards they left, giving me a friendly good bye.

I watched the other dancers for a while and sat marveling at this thing tango, in which you can not hide, which always shows you unvarnished no matter how pretty dresses or shoes you wear. You just need to enter into an embrace and you know exactly where and who the other one is at this moment. If he or she is showing off, is honest or insecure, exuberant or passive...

Eventually, the music spilled me out on the street and back home into my bed where I fell asleep happily.

P. S. This small impression is in no way representative for the large and famous Berlin tango scene.
