In clear daylight, I revisit my milonga experiences of this week-end. And I feel the need to pick up a thread of a guest-tanguera that recently occurred on the Tango-in-Hamburg page of Facebook.
The Question is: How does an unknown tanguera get to dance on an milonga? This does not only apply to guest tangueras but also to those not regularly visiting this specific milonga. I have put together a collection of thoughts, a mix of ideas posted on this thread on facebook, my personal experience and ideas arising in discussions with other tangueras:
Tipps für Tangueras
- Komme eher frühzeitig zur Milonga.
- Nimm Kontakt mit den Veranstaltern auf.
- Wechsel Deine Schuhe an prominenter Stelle.
Tipps for tangueras:
- Arrive early at the milonga.
- Establish contact with the host.
- Change your shoes in a prominent position.
- Do not sit in the darkest corner.
- Bring along a friend so that you have at least one tanda to show you can dance.
- Cultivate the mirada.
- The cabeceo implies an explicit invitation, a nod with the head for example. Just staring does not count.
- Engage other guests in a conversation - small talk will do.
- At the beginning of a tanda stop talking and look for dance partners.
- Change your position - hang around the bar, go to the toilet taking lots of time to stroll along the dance floor. Everything to increase your visibility.
- And - I nearly forgot - relax! And reduce your expectations to zero.
And from the perspective of the tangueros:
- It is annoying to be stared at constantly. If he does not react, he is not interested or he does not use the cabeceo. Stop transfixing him.
- The attractivity of a tanguera who is sitting for ages with a sourly staring look tends towards zero. And is reduced even more in the course of the evening (you could compare it a bit to the meat counter - pieces that have been sitting there longer acquire a certain tint and are no longer sold to regular fares).
- The large number of free single tangueras at a milonga can be a gold mine or a burden, depending on mindset and form of the day.
Everyone visiting a milonga comes with the intention to dance.
Not everyone wants to dance with everybody.
All of us at a milonga create its energy and atmosphere. Its we ourselves that make it a special and touching experience or a segregating and boring one.
It won't hurt a tiny bit to ask at least one unknown tanguera to dance at every milonga. It could even be very enjoyable (If I want to make sure it does not hurt, I invite her towards the end of the tanda).
This week-end, I applied nearly all of those wise tipps. But still I had only one dance with another tanguero a part from my friend-tanguero. I was invited by a visiting guest and had a very pleasant tanda with him. Later on I observed that this guest asked another dancer who had been sitting the whole evening and thereby had her dance the only tanda of the eveing. A very fine dancer she was by the way. No need to mention that his own partner was not asked to dance. Sometimes I long for a milonga with ONLY guests...
I very much appreciate your opinions, ideas and experiences!
