Alma Mia

ALMA MIA as sung by Roberto Rufino

I am time and time again surprised to find that Tango Argentino is wide enough to leave room for a 3-4th rhythm, a vals. I have been told that this vals is a re-import from Europe, brought back to Buenos Aires after the european golden Era of the Tango. Quite obviously at least in Germany (I do not yet have Tango-Experience in other countries), we have waltz-souls. Whenever a vals-tanda is played at a milonga (carefully embedded in Tango-tandas), there is an immediate energization of the entire room, an excited spirit. Conversations quit and dancers eagerly search for the ideal vals-partner. In no time at all every one is on their feet dancing. The few left over dancers err around in search of a partner - impossible to stay seated with those excited legs. We have waltz-souls.

But the tango vals does differ quite a bit from the European waltz. The dynamics of the 3/4th rhythm are translated to a linear sweep, not into a diving, turning, swaying movement or "Schunkeln" (there is no such English word, is there?), as common for the waltz. The forward movement, the drive, does not want to be stopped. Therefore, contrary to a tango, there are few stops, more sweeping, flowing motions. Some vals are playful and faster and allow for playful, even flamboyant movements. Others are more melancholic and have a sad, flowing feeling, like a fast flowing river by which you gladly let yourself be swept away.

One of my favorite vals at the time is ALMA MIA as recorded by Carlos Di Sarli with the fantastic singer Roberto Rufino. Here it is:

I find it quite remarcable how Di Sarli stages this simple melody. In essence, it is a conversation between the strings and the piano, making room for the singer in the middle.

Also:

After a short 9-bar-introduction the violins take up their melancholy melody line, a simple suite of notes descending bar by bar. After 16 bars this melody is repeated but finds a different ending. This is part A. In part B, the melody winds itself upward, building up tension, only to recede again, ebbing away – again 16 bars which are repeated in a similar way. Thats more or less all. Parts A and B are played once, then Roberto Rufino takes over parts A and B, and finally, part A is repeated one last time only by the orchestra.

I am fascinated by the way Di Sarlys interwines his clear and brilliant piano into the meldoy line, sometimes nearly dissolving it. First, he only builds in transitions at the endings of each phrase. But then he intrudes more and more, sometimes underlining and accentuating the melody, sometimes adding rhythmic patterns, always making the music denser. The bandoneons of the orchestra have a side role here. They accompany the melody line and mainly add a different color to the music. Only once are they allowed to play the melody alone: in the reprise of part A after the singer has finished. 8 bars which are over so fast that you may as well miss them.

The background for this mise-en-scene is the 3-4th rhythm, nearly entirely produced by Di Sarli with his „piano-rhythm-group“. He accentuates the beats 2 and 3 of this rhythm, the (um)-ta-ta, giving it a constant drive. Only in the parts where Rufino takes over the melody line and the violins otherwise would be unemployed, to they take over the rhythm-machine, the 2s and 3s. Towards the end of Rufinos part B, the violins produce a very dense structure of repeated 8th notes, densing up the structure and creating the climax of the song.

Listen to the vals once more, all ears for the sweet and rich sound of the violins. And then one time just listening to the brilliant and sparkeling piano of Di Sarli. Can you hear his personality gleaming through his playing? And then just for the delight of it, listen to it once with ears only for the young and charming voice of Rufino, absorbing the yearning words of Héctor Marcó:

Alma mía, ¿con quién soñás? / He venido a turbar tu paz.

My soul - what are you dreaming of? / I came to disturb your peace. / But don't condemn me, I am a singer / who yearns to weave into your dreams / a verse of Buenos Aires, drunk of love.

When you awake, don't curse me / I am here because I adore you / because I suffer, because I implore you / because I yearn for you to tell me / if it is true that when you are dreaming / your love is caressing me. / Your colors, butterfly, / have stolen my heart.
