Chacarera!

Chacarera Choreography

No direct body contact, only flirting eye contact. No improvisation but a set choreography. And pure joy! There can probably be no greater contrast to Tango. But it is fun like hell! I had the opportunity to participate in a small and lovely class of "Chacarera", one of the argentine folk dances. Stepping in the swinging 6/8th rhythm with raised arms, keeping eye contact and flirting with my counterpart, I learned to make my way through one of the most common choreographies. The contrast to tango is so elementary and thereby so refreshing, that I now can understand why they sometimes insert a Chacarera session in milongas in BA. Groupdynamics, flirt and archaic joy - could have more of that!

Chacarera Rhythm

A wonderful toy in the Chacarera a rhythmic shift between 2 and 3. The pulse of the chacarera ist a 6/8 rhythm, 6/8 in each bar. You can group these 6/8 in 2 groups of three 8th, giving a 2-beat-feeling (orange in the sketch), or in 3 groups of 2/8th, giving a 3-beat feeling like in a vals (blue in the sketch). Both variations are always present, but often one seems to prevail. When listening, you sometimes cannot decide which of them to feel, the music seems to waver between the two.

In this example you can quite clearly hear the 2-beat-rhythm at the beginning. The audience is clapping (red in my sketch): 1 (2) 3  4 (5) 6 1 (2) 3  4 (5) 6...  We feel: 1 – and 2 – and 1 – and 2...

When the singer enters the scene, the music changes to a 3-beat feeling, wich can be very clearly heard when listening to and watching the drummer. With his left hand he is playing the (1) 2 3 beats of the walz, the "ta-ta" of the "um-ta-ta" of the walz. In between you can hear the hand clappings in a 2-beat feeling (1 (2) 3  4 (5) 6 1 (2) 3  4 (5) 6...). The interlude has a 2-beat-feeling, listen how the clappers have problems getting back into their pattern.

This wavering between 2 and 3-beat rhythm gives the special musical charme to the chacarera. Dancers most of the time tend to step to the clapping rhythm, the 2-beat-rhythm, however sometimes such as in the last giro, a 3-beat pattern is danced. Thrilling!!!
